HUGELKULTUR
RAISED BEDS

We love the hugelkultur process because it utilises the green waste resources we have on hand to build soils, which will break down over time to feed soil biology and plants. This process recycles materials on site, and saves money on expensive compost inputs which would otherwise be needed to fill our 6m raised beds.

The process starts out by laying small logs in the bottom of the bed, then layering branches, sticks and then wood chips. Next a nitrogen layer is added such as fresh spray free grass clippings, aged manure, bokashi, seaweed etc. then some more wood chip, spray free straw, or leaves, another layer of nitrogen as above and then topped with a layer of spray free straw and watered in to assure good moisture retention. We often cover this with bird netting to assure the straw stays in place until we’re ready to plant into the bed, at which time we will hoop and cover.
