COMPOSTING
Grow Wānaka utilises many composting methods in the garden, some of which are Vermicomposting (worm farming), Bokashi, Thermal (hot) Composting, Cold Composting, In situ Lasagna Beds, and Hugelkultur Beds.
Each composting method provides a unique end product, which can be used in different ways throughout our growing season. As an organic garden, recycling resources through compost creation is an essential component of our operations, helping us to rejuvenate soil biology and fertility, and build a robust soil food web within our soil and garden ecosystem.
We pride ourselves on making high quality bio-complete composts out of a wide variety of materials that are teaming with micro and macroorganisms, plant available nutrients and life!
If you want to learn more about composting, keep an eye out for our composting workshops throughout the year, or pop down and visit us at the garden during our Saturday morning working bees. We love to chat about all things compost and help to guide your own composting journey.
HOW OUR ORGANICS DROP OFF STATION WORKS
To assist our community in reducing organics to landfill we have created a drop off hub at the garden where households can deliver their food scraps suitable for worm farming.
Step One
Familiarise yourself with our worm farm poster below and the food items we can and can’t accept.
Please note:
We cannot accept any compostable packaging, plastics, biodegradable packaging or alternative materials deemed biodegradable such as bamboo, plus rubber bands, fruit stickers etc.
Step Two
At home place your acceptable organics in a container. The finer the organics are chopped, the faster the worms can process them and the more organics we can take, so a bit of extra care at home goes a long way at the garden.
Step Three
Deliver your organics to our small white buckets at our designated and signed drop off hub located at 197 Outlet Road Wanaka. The drop off hub is just to the left of the main garden gate and produce pantry as you arrive at the garden. Grow Wānaka can be found on google maps.
